Adventure Education and Wilderness Sports Essay -- Physical Education
Are you ever satisfied when you do something and do not receive the results you want? I know you are not and nobody is. Everyone wants improvement in the world and people are happy and satisfied when everything is right. This concept can be applied to the world of physical education in todayââ¬â¢s society. Obesity has slowly become one of the most problematic diseases that exist in the United States and the world today. The U.S. has been greatly impacted by this disease and more and more people in todayââ¬â¢s society are overweight, unhealthy, and out of shape. Everyone knows that this issue needs to be fixed but in order to fix a problem you need to discover where the problem comes from. Many people blame food companies, which sell unhealthy food to people; others blame the media for promoting things such as junk food or video games. Other people blame the physical education systems in schools. Many people believe that physical education is not doing enough to help childr en and younger generations develop healthier habits. There is no doubt that society needs to change from being unhealthy and overweight to physically active and healthy, but many changes need to be done in society to do so, and making adjustments to physical education must be done. Physical education exists in schools to help students perform physical activity in schools and promote healthy lifestyles. It is extremely important that physical education teachers promote physical activity and healthy diets to young students because they are the ones who will be at risk of developing health issues such as obesity. Physical educators need to teach the younger generation the proper way to stay healthy so that they will continue to be physically active outside of phys... ...ntinue to do these activities to stay physically active. The younger generation needs to be taught these activities rather than team sports, because when they grow older volleyball, soccer, and basketball are harder to fit into your life than hiking or cycling for example. There is no doubt that physical education programs across the nation need to be adjusted or changed, and implementing Wilderness Sports and Adventure Education is an effective decision. Vaccination and Eradication of Smallpox Essay -- Biology Medical Biome
The Vaccination and Eradication of Smallpox Smallpox, a disease caused by the variola virus, has devastated humanity for many centuries. Because of its high mortality rate, civilizations around the world sought to protect themselves from this disease. Throughout the 1700's, these protective methods became more sophisticated, and led up to Edward Jennerââ¬â¢s vaccination method in 1796. Indeed, the World Health Organization, the Center for Disease Control and the Agency for International Development began a joint program to eradicate smallpox in 1967. It utilized methods of mass vaccination, surveillance, and containment. The endeavor was successful, and in 1980, WHO officially declared the eradication of smallpox. Since 1000 B.C., the world had been plagued by the variola virus, the causative agent of smallpox. The disease has a 30% mortality rate (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2004). Consequently, it was a great victory for humankind when the World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared the eradication of smallpox from the world. The smallpox vaccine was the first vaccine ever developed, and the eradication was the first successful eradication of a disease. Therefore, it is very important for society to study the processes that led to the vaccination and eradication of smallpox. Inoculation, a process that offered protection from smallpox, can be dated back to 1000 B.C. In China, the smallpox scabs were powdered and blown into noses, and in India, pus was rubbed into skin lesions to immunize the healthy individuals against future infections. Throughout Asia and Great Britain, inoculation was also frequently practiced (History and Eradication of Smallpox, n.d., p.2). Inoculation methods improved over time. Caroline Birds College Is a Waste of Time and Money Essay -- Universi
In her article ââ¬Å"College Is a Waste of Time and Moneyâ⬠, Caroline Bird attempts to pursued her readers that colleges are overflowing with students who donââ¬â¢t belong there. Her article first appeared in Psychology Today (May 1975). Since this material is outdated, I find it hard to believe that most of the responses by students and parents quoted in the article still hold true. The author has set out to pursue the readers that college is a bad and unnecessary choice for todayââ¬â¢s youth. Yet the author holds a bachelors and a masters degree from two different universities. I would think that if she thought college was really a bad choice and a waste of time and money, she would not have gone back to get her masters degree. I am a college student myself and there were only two things in the whole article that I was in agreement with. One was that colleges try to market themselves. The other was her paragraph on how Americans are looking less and less for great paying jobs and are looking more for job that they like doing. This unfortunately is also a contradiction to her piece of writing, because college prepares, and helps you get a job that you will enjoy. Furthermore, the authorââ¬â¢s main ideas were not well thought out or well supported. An example of this might be her money investment idea. She implies that if an eighteen year old invested his/hers college tuition money in a bank, and kept it there till he/she was sixty-four, they would be twice as rich as those who go to school, graduate and work in their field of study. What she fails to mention is that while their money is gathering interest, it can not be touched till their sixty-four, and in the mean time they have to be making a living in another job which they probably hate doing. Overall, Birdââ¬â¢s attempt to pursue her readers that college is a waste of time did not work on me. Students are in colleges because they are told to, or because they still want to be financially depend on their parents and not have to worry about growing up to face the real world. The author in her article writes such ideas. Furthermore, since colleges became a big industry in the 60ââ¬â¢s, and now the number of people attending has fallen, colleges use marketing skills to bring more students in. They try to make college sound as easy as possible to make more people register. Students, once in college are not happy and drop out,... ...hat parents want a better and easier way of life for their kids. My parents send me to college so that I could make more money doing an easier job than they have to do, because they lack a college diploma. She feels that eighteen-year-olds should make their own choice whether to go to college or not. I think that when a person is eighteen, they are too young to make their own decisions. I know this from my own experience. If I had a freedom of choice when I was eighteen, I would not be writing this critique, because I would not be in college. But now that I have grown up and did some thinking I want to stay and get my degree. I feel that kids should at least try college, learn and see a couple of things and then decide whether they should stay or go. Generally, parents without a college education are the ones who put the most emphasis on their kids going to college and making something of themselves, in order to have a better life then they had. The author then goes on to challen ge her own ideas by saying that college does prepare you for a job that you actually might like doing, and that is what most Americans want. So then would not college be a good choice for most Americans?

A Historical Look at U.S. GAAP Essay
ABSTRACT This paper discusses the historical development of generally accepted accounting principles through its contributing sources from 1930 to the present. U.S. Businesses had been using double entry accounting since the 1800s yet no uniform accounting practices had been introduced until the American Institute of Accountants (AIA) recommended to the New York Stock Exchange in 1932, â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ five broad principles of accounting which have won fairly general acceptanceâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ , (Zeff, 2005, para. 4). In which, the terms ââ¬Å"fairly presentâ⬠and ââ¬Å"in accordance withâ⬠were first used followed up with ââ¬Å"generally accepted accounting principlesâ⬠. Later, a sixth principle was approved. These recommendations were based on the three assumptions that all business transactions were apart from the business owner, all transaction currencies measured in the US dollar, the assumption of time and the matching principle. Thus establishing a foundation of which all future accounting principles are based. The AIA formed the Committee on Accounting Procedures (CAP) to publish Accounting Research Bulletins (ARB) on GAAP under the authority of the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) created by the Securities Act of 1934. The CAP was later reorganized into the Accounting Principles Board (APB) that issued Opinions between 1959 and 1973. The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has been the source for private sector generally accepted accounting principles since 1973. Input by the private sector has been crucial to the development of GAAP since 1930. Historically, GAAP is influenced by the business condition and public interest. The Great Depression left the public with little faith in the private sector. Although the knowledge and experience of businesses would be consulted for standards; businesses were not trusted to set and regulate accounting standards. A common practice in the 1920s was to adjust asset values upward to the highest market value arguably misleading investors prior to the 1929 crash (Zeff, 2005, para. 10). In response, CAP and the SEC strongly mandated historical cost accounting as the acceptable basis of reporting. Shortly after, the U.S. was brought into WWII directing the CAPââ¬â¢s focus to issues pertaining to war time accounting. In addition, the CAP addressed the issues of the exclusion of unrealized profit from income, the use of capital surplus to offset losses, and notes and accounts receivable from officers, employees, and affiliated companies. The most notable item during the CAPââ¬â¢s tenure summed up was its ARBs issued in response to congressââ¬â¢s decision permitting companies to use the LIFO inventory method. This was a rare instance that tax policy influenced GAAP and was initially directed to companies purchasing natural metals because the FIFO method was equated to higher income taxes due to the time lapse between the assetââ¬â¢s acquisition and sale (Zeff, 2005). The method was available to all industries in 1939. While CAP was praised for addressing questionable reporting practices prior to the crash; it was mostly labeled as weak by critics for failing to set a uniform accounting framework to mitigate comparability issues. At the advice of the AIA, now known as the AICPA, the Accounting Principles Board replaced the CAP. ARB 43 was quickly published to restate all Accounting Research Bulletins and eliminate any superseded ARBs. The research driven APB published 31 opinions. The first few answered reporting questions regarding the investment credit per the Revenue Act of 1962 allotting businesses a credit for a ââ¬Å"â⬠¦specified percentage of the cost of certain depreciable assets placed into service after 1961â⬠(FASB, 1962, para.1). The board concluded that the credit may be recorded as an offset to net income over the assetââ¬â¢s life or as a reduction in acquisition cost during the period it occurred. This is important because it is a conceptual precursor to todayââ¬â¢s section 179 and bonus depreciation credits of which most small and medium sized businesses depend on and consider when determining capital investments. All opinions regarding credits and other tax reporting issues were later superseded by the FASBââ¬â¢s statement number 109, Accounting for Income Tax. Many of the APBââ¬â¢s remaining opinions dealt with emerging issues brought about by the postindustrial economy. For instance, the board developed guidelines for intangible assets such as goodwill, the equity method of accounting for common stock, accounting for employee stock options, the reporting of extraordinary items in the income statement, and set the criteria to use pooling of interest or the purchase method in business combinations. The most controversial accomplishment of the APB was its 1970 publication Basic Concepts and Accounting Principles Underlying Financial Statements of Business Enterprises. The boardââ¬â¢s issuance of this as a non-authoritative ââ¬Å"standardâ⬠rather than opinion was met with negative criticism as it failed to commit to any conceptual framework solutions and reaffirmed the fundamental disagreement among members on this topic. The board was soon after dissolved and replaced by the FASB with new, independent members in 1973. Nearly all APB Opinions were superseded by FASB statements (FAS) at different points in time. The FASB remains the authoritative source for private sector accounting practices today. The Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002 restated the FASBââ¬â¢s position in setting accounting standards. The FASB does not have the authority to enforce standards. The responsibility has always been with managers to prepare and file financial statements in accordance to GAAP with the SEC. Auditors, overseen by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), issue opinions on the conformity and accuracy of the financial statements. The role of auditors has become increasingly crucial in the post Enron era. The FASB remains committed to addressing any deficiencies in the reporting process and meeting regularly with the PCAOB and SEC to prevent future financial disasters. Probably the most serious issues to date addressed by the FASB resulted from the subprime mortgage crisis and the subsequent financial crisis of 2008. According to Leslie Seidman (2011), chairman of the FASB, high profile controversy relating to the determination of the fair value of assets and liabilities in an illiquid market prompted the issuance of FAS 157, Fair Value Measurements. Effective November 2007, the standard expanded disclosure for fair value measurements and included changes in fair value practice ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ for certain entitiesâ⬠(FASB, 2006, para. 1). The FAS 133 released in January 2008 provided new and additional guidance on derivatives and designated a team within the FASB to assist with statement implementation. The FASB works to ââ¬Å"harmonizeâ⬠the previously mentioned standards and all others with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Discussion of international accounting principles has occurred for decades and an International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC) has existed since 1973. It was not until the 1990s when globalization motivated the FASB to deliberate a strategic plan for international activities. In 2002, the FASB and IASB started collaborating to ââ¬Å"convergeâ⬠US GAAP and International Accounting Standards. A memorandum of understanding was released by the two boards in 2006 and amended in 2008. In 2011, the FASB sent a letter to the IFRS Foundation Trustees describing its views on many key issues. The FASB continues to balance long term IASB projects with its work on issues relating to US GAAP. REFERENCES Financial Accounting Standards Board. (1962). The Effects of Media on Teenagers
As a teen, I myself think itââ¬â¢s pretty safe to say that TV, as well as movies and other media, are some of our primary sources of information about sex and sexuality. Statistics estimate that the average teen will be exposed to around 15000 references to sex each year on TV. TV shows and movies make it seem normal for teenagers to have sex. And letââ¬â¢s be honest, it probably is. But the fact of the matter is the media has a whole lot of influence over the way we perceive sexuality, and actually a great deal of it comes from the music industry, especially through music videos. You try to think of one song thatââ¬â¢s been on MTV music channel, that hasnââ¬â¢t mentioned anything remotely to do with sex or a broken relationship. Now think of one music video youââ¬â¢ve watched on 4music channel that didnââ¬â¢t include one scrap of sexual imagery or expose and focus on a scantily clad female. Yeah, didnââ¬â¢t think you could. Whatââ¬â¢s worse is that a recent study of video games teenage boys regularly play found that the few female characters in those games are often highly sexualizedââ¬âwearing tight revealing clothing and having unrealistically large breasts, and unnaturally disfiguring small waists. Is this distorting the way guys view real women? Well, sorry for the wakeup call boys, but youââ¬â¢re in for a shocking discovery. Another study of network television commercials found that nearly one in 4 commercials includes some type of sexual attractiveness as a base for the message. What is going on with the world? Are we so unimaginative weââ¬â¢ve resorted to sexual attraction as a method to persuade people to buy shampoo? Is this nation as gullible to believe that ââ¬Ëwhen you buy this insanely expensive bottle of shampoo, youââ¬â¢ll automatically transform from your naught-over-average self into this booby-blonde bimbo who probably eats an average of 200 calories a dayââ¬â¢ really? Why donââ¬â¢t we just change it from ââ¬ËAdvertising Executivesââ¬â¢ to freaking ââ¬ËPornography Wholesaleââ¬â¢ and be done with it?! Which brings me to another point. Young girls were quoted as saying that they would prefer to have cancer, lose both their parents, or live through a nuclear holocaust than be fat. You might be thinking, ââ¬ËIs this a joke? ââ¬â¢ I really wish it was. Because take it from someone who has grown up with only one parent, being fat is the least of your worries. And this problem isnââ¬â¢t limited to just girls, oh no. Because the amount of males with eating disorders has in fact doubled over the past decade. Sorry lads, but youââ¬â¢re not faultless. On the other hand, nobody is. Even the media canââ¬â¢t hide from you that basic fact ââ¬â the new Rimmel girl, quite frankly, looks almost the double of a frogmouth catfish. Not that they donââ¬â¢t put up a good fight. Take one look at any middle-shelf magazine and youââ¬â¢ll see exactly what every single other woman in the country no doubt sees, ââ¬â todayââ¬â¢s airbrushed perception of the perfect beauty. The elementary trend in the media industry at present is to promote slim, almost unnaturally skinny womenââ¬â¢s bodies, and sell it out as the only way to be accepted as beautiful. Women, especially young women, take one look at magazines, TV programmes, movies and other media products and accept this falsified version of a human being, and distressingly of all, believe in it. These images are distinguished in the mind of young women as being a role model to follow, and aspire to be like. Unfortunately girls, attaining this emaciated look doesnââ¬â¢t come naturally (unless youââ¬â¢ve been blessed with an insanely high metabolism ââ¬â for which, I am extremely resentful), and inevitably leads to exercising some form of diet, excessive amounts of exercise or aberrant eating behaviours. In actual fact, the number of people with some form of eating disorder is triple the amount of people with AIDS. Two in five women have admitted that they were unhappy with their bodies, which means 40% of you reading this know exactly what Iââ¬â¢m talking about. The media does affect us, and there isnââ¬â¢t much we can do about that. What you can do, is stop comparing yourself to the cover models ââ¬â because theyââ¬â¢re not real women. Beauty is natural, not airbrushed, and natural is how you are in yourself ââ¬â not how you adapt yourself around an imageââ¬â¢s expectations.
Cognitive Therapy
Cognitive therapy Is an effective tool In treating anger Issues In young children, especially teens and adolescents. Cognitive therapy has been used by counselors for many years, and has been proven to be quite effective in the management of teen anger issues. Different methods and techniques have been used for different individuals suffering from anger issues. The specific method used depends on the severity of the anger, and on what works best because each individual will react differently to certain types of treatment. This type of therapy Involves the ability for one to change their irrational Hough processes into more rational and healthier thoughts. Cognitive therapy also allows teens to cope with their anger in a healthier way. It Is especially Important to help teens control his or her anger because teenagers can be very rebellious and stubborn in changing their ways (Hall, 2012). Anger management can be counterproductive for any individual. It can cause problems with relation ships, employment, or during social events. Cognitive therapy teaches teens ways in which this type of unhealthy anger can be channeled properly (Hall, 2012).Counselors have found that cognitive therapy Is extremely effective In reading teenagers with anger problems. Cognitive therapy Is especially necessary In situations in which the teen can have a severe and sudden outburst. These types of scenarios can cause teems to bring harm to themselves or others, and should never be taken too lightly. When anger is noticed in adolescents, it is a necessity that such issues be dealt with at a very young age. If the child is left untreated for too long, serious damage can occur later on In that Individual's life. These types of programs have been proven to change the behavior and the way information is processed for the teen. It shows them a new way to cope with their anger and to change their ways of behaving. Of course these are Just some techniques and tools used for anger management in te ens. Anger management uses different ways of controlling and managing anger to avoid rash behavior. Teenage anger should not be ignored it can lead to violence, substance abuse, or participation in high-risk behavior. An example is a teenage multiple offender with road rage is ordered by a Judge to attend anger management classes. This tool helps teenagers to identify their triggers, warning signs, and ways to diffuse their anger effectively, before they react. It helps reduce stress, anxiety, and antisocial behaviors. An important skill for teenagers to cultivate is healthy anger management. Anger is normal, and we must deal with it in an appropriate way. Anger management skills are stress management techniques, communication, and problem-solving skills. Techniques of anger management require practice but becomes like second nature with repetition. It is acceptable to Just leave the situation that may make the teenager angry. It can be best for them to give themselves time to cool do wn. It is important for the teenager to give creative expression to defuse the emotion. They can write down what they feel and be honest about their feeling and what made hem angry. The writing should be private and not read by anyone. It is important for the teenager to get the feelings out instead of bottling them up inside. Playing calm music can be relaxing to some as well and help settle the anger.A walk, Jog, or work out can help a teenager channel their anger. This helps to reduce a person's emotional tension. Exercise helps endorphins neuron chemicals that help calm and relax them. This allows them to constructively deal with the situation that angers them. The teenager must recognize the emotion and sensations that come with anger to allow them to manage and prevent the anger from turning into rage. The signs are a racing heartbeat and muscle tension. Knowing the signals that trigger the anger can help the teenager constructively deal with the anger.Relaxation is a good tec hnique to use. The five steps that teenagers need to learn are to identify the source of the anger, identify three possible solutions, identify possible consequences, choose their response, and analyze the reaction after the situation is over. The teenagers can use the games found in ââ¬Å"104 Activities That Buildâ⬠, by Author Alan Jones. They help build on self-esteem and hide anger and fears. If teenagers manage their stress and anger it lowers their risk for eating disorders, depression, heart disease, high blood pressure, and substance abuse. The most critical years for a child's development are his or her teenage years. Children are observing the surroundings and making mistakes to learn new experiences. What the child is exposed to challenges that are pleasant and unpleasant and the way the child learns to deal with them is what molds his or her personality (Crawl, 2009). When that child becomes a teenager, when he or she s exposed to an upsetting or unpleasant situation , the teen often lashes out. When these situations escalate, the situation may become unmanageable, and this is the time to seek professional help for the teen.Learning to control anger and take positive steps to control impulsive behavior can be accomplished through counseling. Counseling helps empower teenagers how to react in a stressful situation and retain this information well into adult life (Crawl, 2009). The teenager is taught through counseling to evaluate every situation before making a decision that may prove to be damaging. Crawl (2009), ââ¬Å"There are various methods for anger management among teenagers, but the end result is what really mattersâ⬠(Para. 3).Many teens find it easier to express his or her feelings freely and is not afraid to hear what the counselor has to say. The counseling sessions will encourage teens to make slow but steady changes. The teen believe that the therapist provides a supportive environment and the therapist cares what will happen to him or her, so the teen will feel relaxed enough to want to change. There are many effective techniques to help teenagers deal with pressure; cognitive hereby has been proven to work more effectively than others.
